A cheap, simple, already-existing drug could quite possibly cure cancer... but since its patent has expired, no pharmaceutical companies are willing to fund clinical trials because they won't be able to make a profit.

Money is the name of the game.
I'm going to have to bring this up in my pharmacy class tomorrow.

i hope you had good luck with that...

there are so many stories of great cures or treatments that don't make it because of the money game - i was glad to find this important story

i also knew that some cancer and aids drugs are used to shut down all cell reproduction - which i always thought was promising - except that new healthy cell production lost out - so something that selctively targets cancer cells is very promising news!

as someone who does clinical trials research, i will tell you that it seriously costs MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of dollars to run enough trials for the drug to get an FDA approval. there are several phases of trials which need to be run with hundreds of subjects. cancer trials in particular are some of the most expensive due to the requirements of CT scans, etc. companies need to make money to make up for this huge investment, and if they can't do it, its hard to want to cough up that money.

HI ssssssssssssssssssssara!

i want you to comment more! - i want to to be a permanent person in my life - as ephemeral as it is...

anyway - yeah - i've been in clinical trials - and i know they cost millions

but the bottom line is profit - so drug companies don't do that shit unless they think it will pay

in this case it won't because it's basically pubic domaine thank godness

no drug company in it's grubby little right mind would do trials on this drug

which is why we need a research structure going beyond the profit motive yo
saraara at 2007-02-02 03:39 (UTC) (Lien)
i don't think the research structure is about profit, its the fact that the FDA has (rightfully so) set up so many barriers to drugs getting on the market that its just an expensive task to undertake. in this cause, i think the government should get off its ass and fund this research instead since a company obviously won't foot the bill when they know they won't even come close to breaking even.

actually we agree

the research structure is about profit because the gov't makes it so -sometimes i think we live in a banana republic and the only dif is that we are rich

we should live in canada ok - yes - come on - let me take you to canada

i could prolly still live there and get my ssi

maybe i'd disagree but not after a few good wisconsin beers

which i do

in rightful indignation

about everthing goddamit

It doesn't surprise me that drug companies would be against anything they can't make money off. How sad is it when money is all that matters in this society ?

is drugs
