If there were open communication between institutions and individuals, and if everyone made their intentions clear, there wouldn't need to be gossip. Unfortunately, the world isn't like that, and we need gossip in order to survive. I had a coworker who refused to listen to gossip...and things didn't work out for her. (Annie Fannie had it in for her, and had the managers' ear.)

This is partly true. It isn't all one way or the other. I have written before how the evolution of civilisation was partly made possible by the females', and friends', ability to gossip, and so to contest the dominant males. I was thinking of posting a follow-up to this post.

While the Pope is correct, there is also a naivete, found in Puritanist Progressivism, which ultimately tends to control the bahaviours of others through morality, and sometimes force, under the banner of good intentions.

Nevertheless, so much gossip is just dissipation, defending the retarded status quo, and injuring the less powerful. It depends, as always, who is the political group who is doing the gossipping.
