tuna, tuna, won't be just any na

Here is a recipe for tuna salad, which I properly combined from 5 separate recipes. You may vary some of the ingredients, and so increase other ingredients to compensate. That is why the recipe is divided into subgroups, to make this simple. For example, if you don't have crunchy water chestnuts, you can increase something else in that group, like celery, (which is a traditional ingredient for tuna salad).

When I make this, soon, I may use a lot of my relish, and some eggs. But I will forgo the cottage cheese, since I have none. But I do have some soured Mexican milk cheese, which I will use. I have no idea what "capers" are!

I might update this post with whatever my final-result recipe was. Fortunately, J-Girl (below) seems to be doing double shift, (maybe so she can have a vacation with her mother in LA), and so I have more time to do things, like cook, or talk on the telephone, or breathe.

I have included the five recipes under the link. These are good in their own right. I am not crazy about eating tuna, but I acquire such things via the pantry.

Tuna Fish Salad - Meta-Recipe: Note - "12 ounces can/s tuna" = one 12 oz can or two 6 oz can, (solid white) tuna - FLAKE -

12 ounces can/s tuna packed in water - drained well - (add 1 tsp olive oil, if desired)

1⁄4 cup mayonnaise - less or more, to taste; (&/or salad dressing)
1 teaspoon of Dijon or Grey Poupon mustard - or to taste
1/8-1/4 cup fresh lemon juice - [&/or ACV]

1/4 cup of cottage cheese - or to taste
1 tablespoon freshly grated Parmesan or Romano cheese

1 large (or 1 & 1/2) celery stalk, chopped finely
4 tablespoons dill pickles or relish, or sweet gherkins, minced
1/8 to 1/4 cucumber - [or relish]
1/4 can sliced water chestnuts

1/4 small purple or red onion, chopped finely - or use onion flakes
1 pinch garlic or 1⁄4 garlic clove, minced or pressed

1⁄4 teaspoon salt (or less)
1 pinch or 1⁄8 teaspoon ground black pepper
3 Tbsp dried; or minced fresh parsley leaves
1 pinch to 1/4 teaspoon curry powder

1-2 teaspoon capers
1/8 cup sliced black olives
Add sliced hard boiled eggs, if desired.

UPDATE: I used some extra things. About 1/3 cup canned carrot slices, and one Romano tomato, which went unnoticed taste-wise. I used a little chopped cilantro stalks. I added a tiny bit of turmeric powder, celery salt, cumin powder, chives powder, green onion greens. While I was mixing, the spice mix reminded me of Coriander, although Coriander was not used. I used less total onion, plus onion powder to compensate a little. (Found out what capers are - and need to get these, and dill. I have used fresh shallots in the past - but idk if I have ever used fresh chives, endives, chards - ! I have used some big stalks which are a lot like onions, which I liked, but my brain can't remember name - maybe these were chards - ?) I added three chopped/mushed eggs - could have added several more. Since my mayo was largely imitation mayo which I made - (and then mixed w/ some regular mayo) - it was too thin. I added a third can of tuna. The final product was very good, once I added a fair amount of extra salt. The ripe Mexican cheese, which was chopped/mushed up, added a good fullness to the mayo, add more. The 5 large tablespoons of my relish was OK, but not a noticeable replacement for cuke or dill/ pickles. The black olives added a great little punch, and could have been more than 1/3 or 1/2 cup.

Classic Tuna Salad
12 ounces can/s tuna packed in water - drained well
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 stalk celery, minced (about 1/4 cup)
2 tablespoons red onions, minced
2 tablespoons dill pickles or 2 tablespoons sweet gherkins, minced
1⁄2 clove garlic, minced or pressed through a garlic press (about 1/8 tsp.)
1⁄2 teaspoon salt
1⁄4 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 tablespoons fresh parsley leaves, minced
1⁄2 cup mayonnaise
1⁄4 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Tuna Salad Sandwich Recipe
12 ounces can/s tuna packed in water - drained well - (add a teaspoon of good quality olive oil)
2/3 cup of cottage cheese
4 Tablespoons of mayonnaise
1/2 purple onion, chopped finely
2 celery stalk, chopped finely
2 Tablespoon of capers
Juice of one lemon
2-4 Pinch of dill
4 Tbsp minced fresh parsley
2 teaspoon of Dijon mustard
(optional - lettuce and sliced tomatoes)
Serve on slices of French bread, lightly toasted

Easy Cheesy Tuna Salad
12 ounces can/s ALBACORE tuna packed in water - drained well
4 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 tablespoon freshly grated Parmesan or Romano cheese
2 teaspoon Grey Poupon classic mustard
1 teaspoon capers
Serve inside hollowed-out tomatoes, on lettuce, or with lettuce (and tomato if desired) on wheat bread

Barbie's Tuna Salad
12-14 ounces can/s tuna packed in water - drained well
12 tablespoons mayonnaise or salad dressing
2 tablespoon Parmesan cheese
6 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
1/4 teaspoon dried minced onion flakes
Season with:
1/2 teaspoon curry powder
2 tablespoon dried parsley
2 teaspoon dried dill weed
2 pinch garlic powder

Crunchy Tuna Salad
12 ounces can/s tuna packed in water - drained well
1/2 cucumber
1 can sliced water chestnuts
1/2 cup sliced black olives
Add sliced hard boiled eggs, if desired.
(note: this recipe never specified the size of the tuna can/s, but my guess it is 12 oz - ???).


Avocado Tuna Salad Sandwich
12 ounces can/s tuna, drained and shredded
4 tablespoons Hellmann's Light Mayonnaise
1 avocado, mashed
1 hard-boiled egg, mashed
Pepper to taste
(Cheese slices - to top: Grain bread, toasted)

Southwest Tuna Salad Sandwich
2 cans (6-oz) solid white tuna packed in water, drained well
1/2 cup minced red bell pepper
1 medium-sized jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
1 tablespoon cilantro, minced
1/2 cup light mayonnaise
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 large clove garlic, peeled and forced through a press
1/4 teaspoon Tabasco sauce (opt)
6 small inner leaves, romaine lettuce, cut into fine shreds
Just before serving, stir in the shreds of romaine lettuce.
2 whole pita bread, split and opened
