Girl in China engrossed in cellphone chat falls into sinkhole

Call it the sinkhole tumble heard around the Web. A teenage girl in north China was walking down the sidewalk while talking on her cellphone, when she fell -- suddenly, and without warning -- into a sinkhole 20-feet deep. The fall was captured by security cameras stationed near the sinkhole, and video of the girl falling through the sidewalk has been making its way around the Internet. Academic studies have shown that pedestrians are less aware of their environment and more prone to engaging in unsafe behaviors when they are talking...

There was someone in New York City that fell into a hole (from construction) while talking on her cellphone - she blamed the city for her fall.

hey - you know, there are more cellphones - and more sinkholes too! eeek!

on the face of it, it looks ridiculous that she sued the city. it is. but it's part of a necessary survival ethic in these States: blame or get screwed. seriously.

every little twist and turn must be contested. technically, it could be argued that the city should have put up barriers, realising that people would be walking around texting and not looking. but of course, any sane person knows the woman was at fault. i just wish all this niggling crap could go away but it never will.

and cities are often vastly unfair bean-throwing monoliths, they deal with citizen blow-back constantly. all is negative. all is contest. since cities are in power, their natural response is to control the public further. and when that happens, i feel like: screw the cities in every way possible, if necessary i guess.

i heard a good interview with an economist, who said we could either solve our inevitably rising economic problems by either confronting them, sitting down like at Bretton Woods, and working out some JUBILEE, etc.

or else: rising inflation will only make people more and more cut-throat, more cunning, more abusive, more blaming and selfish and stressed... and woe - this is what i have been saying for so long. as far as i see, the niggling will only get worse.
